Electronic health records (EHR) systems are being widely adopted in Canada and around the world.  Students graduating in the health sciences will be frontline users of these technologies and their acceptance, attitudes, and proficiency with these systems will be a key factor in their readiness and safety to practice.  As one of the largest health sciences educators in the province, the School of Health Sciences at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is uniquely positioned to take the lead in developing an open source interprofessional educational electronic Clinical Information System (EdCIS) to facilitate education in the health sciences, and ultimately, high quality patient care and safety.                                                                   

We propose to design and develop an open source student-focused, Canadian-based EdCIS that can be customized to accommodate and maximize student learning across the health professions. As such, learning will not be limited to training in the use of navigating an EHR, but it will also provide opportunities for exploring and developing knowledge around the impact of EHRs within CISs on the patient experience, the clinician experience, interprofessional collaboration, and workflow.  Additionally, the EdCIS will introduce students to the concept of data collection and the impact that data has on patient outcomes for real-time patient care and research in the short, medium and long-term.

This system will provide a framework for faculty to author, develop and structure case studies with relevant patient health data. In this way educators will have access to a bank of interprofessional, educationally robust and comprehensive health case studies, with the ability to customize and adapt these case studies as needed to optimize student learning. In addition the system will have the capability to log and track student activities, allow access to quizzes and tutorials, and link to relevant online content and resources. Other potential capabilities include the ability for the EdCIS to work on different platforms and on mobile devices, the ability to host the EdCIS in the “cloud”, and/or integrate it with (or as) the school’s learning management system.

There will be opportunities to provide and/or use this tool collaboratively with other post-secondary health sciences institutions.  Since this will be an open source program, the potential exists for expansion to include other health disciplines such as physiotherapy, medicine, pharmacy and others to develop interprofessional patient care planning. A fully functional EdCIS will provide a platform for the teaching and learning of data analytics.

We will use a design-based research method to discover and define applicable design principles for an EdCIS.  Once initial principles have been generated they will be tested and evaluated in an open source health record platform, in an iterative process.

This Open Source Interprofessional EdCIS developed at BCIT will be shareable with other Post-secondary Schools teaching Healthcare and extendable nationally and internationally.
